Resurrection Tree

My sweet friend Catie gave me a book that I have had on my wish list, Treasuring God in our Traditions by Noel Piper. I was so excited to get this book and have begun reading it. Since becoming a parent I really have been thinking and praying about the traditions our family does. I am so joyful for the opportunity to train Tucker and I really think traditions can play a big role!

I love Easter! It really is my favorite holiday and I just wish it would get the same attention as Christmas! Here is a new tradition that the Crabtree's will be doing this Easter season.

Resurrection Tree
I got this idea by combining the concept of the Jesse Tree done at Christmas time and the Resurrection eggs. You can purchase a set of resurrection eggs, find the items in your home or make them like I did below. My real reason in making them was I had all of the supplies so it was cheaper for me to make the eggs! The only item I purchased was the tree. I found it at Hobby Lobby and it was on sale this week so the total cost of our tree was $14. (A side note... never buy anything full price at Hobby Lobby. The item will go on sale or you can print a 40% coupon that usually happens every other week. Click here for a link to their add/coupons.)

Basically what will happen is 12 days before Easter we will open one egg each night. In the egg will be scripture and an ornament that will then be hung on the tree.

I researched the resurrection eggs and decided on the following scripture (There are few I just couldn't decide which one to use... I am going to get Dave's input while he is home over spring break!):

Egg #1:
Message -- Jesus rode into Jerusalem on a donkey. The people waved palm branches.
Passage -- Matthew 21:1-11 or John 12:12-15
Item -- Palm branch.

Egg #2:
Message -- Mary poured expensive perfume on Jesus' feet.
Passage -- John 12:2-8 or Mark 14:3-9
Item – Perfume bottle

Egg #3:
Message -- Jesus shared the Last Supper with His disciples.
Passage -- Matthew 26:17-29 or Mark 14:12-25
Item – Loaf of bread

Egg #4:
Message -- Judas betrayed Jesus for 30 pieces of silver.
Passage -- Matthew 26: 14-15 and Matthew 26:47-50
Item -- Coin

Egg #5:
Message -- Soldiers placed a crown of thorns on Jesus' head.
Passage -- John 19:2-3
or Matthew 27:27-31
Item – Thorn or crown of thorns

Egg #6:
Message -- Jesus carried His own cross.
Passage -- John 19:17
Item – Cross

Egg #7:

Message -- Jesus was nailed to a cross and pierced in His side.
Passage – Luke 23:32-34a
Item -- A nail

Egg #8:
Message -- Soldiers parted Jesus' garments and cast lots for His coat.
Passage -- John 19:23-24
Item – Dice

Egg #9:
Message -- They gave Jesus vinegar mixed with gall on a sponge to drink.
Passage --
John 19:28-30
Item -- Sponge

Egg #10:
Message -- Spices to prepare Jesus for burial.
Passage -- John 19:40
Item -- Spice

Egg #11:
Message – A stone covered Jesus’ tomb and was guarded by soldiers
Passage --
Matthew 27:62-66
Item -- Rock

Egg #12:
Message – The stone covering Jesus’ tomb was rolled away. He was not there. He has risen!
Passage – Matthew 28:1-9
Item -- Empty

I am thinking about adding a few more eggs for when Jesus washed the disciples feet (towel and bowl), Jesus praying in the garden (cup/chalice), Peter's denial (rooster), the King of the Jews sign that was hung over Jesus (sign).

I wrote out the verses on the back of scrapbook paper

Numbered the eggs

And made the ornaments. I hand appliquéd them using clip art as my pattern, felt as the background and scrap fabric for the image. (I would be happy to share tips on hand Appliqué... Just send me an email).

Place the items in your egg and place under your tree. You could also store the eggs in an egg carton but my eggs were too large for the carton so I just bunched some scrap fabric under the tree to look like grass. You could also place the eggs in a cute basket. This way you are not limited to 12 yet the egg carton would store them nicely.

Praise the Lord that our Redeemer lives! He is risen!!!! Oh how I love Easter!!!

  1. I LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS!!!!!!!!!! However, there is no way on the earth that I can make those beautiful little ornaments! haha! I will try, but I am going to have to have a plan B! What a wonderful and meaningful (and educational!) tradition! I love it when other people are creative and I can just copy them :)

  2. So glad that you went home and posted a picture of these!!!! And, like with everything else, I am gong to need tips from you on hand-appliqueing! I think the book really is wonderful because of the encouragement to have family traditions that point to Christ, both at holidays and on every other day. You are so talented and your ornaments are beautiful!
