Making a diaper cake

I thought I would share how to make a diaper cake. One new thing I have really enjoyed doing once Tucker is asleep is looking at blogs to get ideas for parties, crafts, decorating, encouragement in the Word, etc. I love finding blogs that show you "how tos" so I thought I should share how to make a diaper cake.

My mom really is the talent with this craft. She did such a great job and putting this cake together and adding the "ruffles" with the ribbon.

Supplies needed:
  • 61 diapers (approximately)
  • 75 rubber bands (approximately)
  • Hot glue gun
  • Ribbon
  • Wooden dowels
  • Topper for cake (we use a wooden "G" but you could use anything you would like. Other ideas would be a small stuffed animal.)
  • Cake stand or a cardboard cake round (something to rest the cake on)
(sorry the picture is crooked!!!)
Step one: Tightly roll the diapers and secure with a rubber band
Step two: Position the diapers in a circle. Start with a small circle and secure with a rubber band. Aline more diapers around the inner circle until you reach the circumference you want. We made three tiers of diapers
Step three: We decorated the cake with sheer ribbon and bunched it to make it appear rufflely. You can decorate using whatever ribbon you would like! We added brown polka dot ribbon at the end to cover the rubber bands. This ribbon was secured using hot glue. Make sure to turn under the ends of the ribbon so you have a "finished end"
Place the ribbon underneath the outside rubber band and pinch to make the ruffle affect.

We added light pink sheer ribbon in between the tiers.
Step four: Secure the tiers by placing a wooden dowel in the center of the cake.
Step five: Place the topper on top of the cake and you are finished!!! We have our cake elevated with a cake stand and I think it turned out really cute!!!

Check out this post for more pictures from the baby shower. I so enjoyed planning this party... I love throwing a party!
